When you go to the grocery store, you may feel overwhelmed with how many yogurt brands are in the dairy aisle. Which ones should you choose?

Benefits of yogurt
Yogurt is a very nutritious food with lots to offer. A few nutritional benefits of yogurt include:
Calcium and phosphorus to support strong bones
Protein for maintenance and repair of muscles
Probiotics for a healthy digestive system
Zinc to support your immune system
Yogurt is also relatively budget-friendly and can be found at most grocery stores.
What to look for when choosing yogurt
If you have perused the yogurt section at the grocery store, you have likely noticed that there are many varieties of yogurts to choose from. Plain yogurt, Greek yogurt, plant-based yogurt, yogurt with toppings - which one is the best one to choose?
As a non-diet dietitian, I firmly believe that there is no “right” or “wrong” food choice. There will be many factors that influence the yogurt you choose, including taste preferences, price, and allergies and intolerances.
Some people express concern with the sugar content of certain yogurts. If you have a condition in which you need to limit added sugar, it may be beneficial to keep tabs of this. However, it is important to remember that it is very possible to be “too healthy” and reading food labels can be a slippery slope into orthorexia tendencies (learn more about that here).
Would it feel good to eat sugary sweet yogurt all day long? Of course not. But this does not mean that you cannot enjoy a sweet, flavored yogurt as a part of a full meal or snack. Depending on the specific yogurt and toppings you might add, it might even be a source of protein, fat, and fiber, making it nice and filling.
In short, food choices are complex. Foods can’t really be classified as “healthy” or “unhealthy”. And we don’t just eat yogurt as a singluar food item - we eat whole meals and snacks! Consider how a food choice is serving you and if you are actually enjoying it.
Best ways to enjoy yogurt
Along with simply eating it out of the container with a spoon, there are so many different ways to enjoy yogurt.
How to boost the protein content of yogurt
One of the benefits of dairy yogurt is that it naturally contains protein, especially if choosing Greek yogurt. If you choose a plant-based yogurt or you would like to increase the protein content of your dairy yogurt, there are a few additions that you can make to make it even more filling.
Sprinkle with chia seeds, hemp heart seeds, or flax seeds
Drizzle with nut butter or mix in peanut butter powder
Stir in a flavored protein powder

There are so many yogurts on the market, each with a slightly different nutrition profile. If protein is something you like in your yogurt, there are quite a few high-protein yogurts to choose from.
